Hot Tub Sanitizing Systems: Fixing Frog Ease Issues or Switching to Something Better

Frog Ease Users explain issues, fixes, and upgrades:

  • Main problem with Frog Ease: It often gets stuck behind the filter and doesn’t regulate alkalinity.
  • Quick fixes:
    • Tether the Frog to the opposite side of the spa with a suction cup, string, or mesh bag
    • Reduce jet flow that pushes it behind the filter
    • Add baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) weekly to stabilize alkalinity
  • Popular alternatives:
    • Bromine floaters (low maintenance, stable in hot water)
    • Mineral stick + ozone/UV systems (softer feel, fewer chemicals)
    • Salt chlorine generators (hands-off automation, consistent sanitizer levels)
    • Traditional chlorine (dichlor granules) (cheap, fast, frequent dosing needed)
  • Bottom line: Frog Ease works, but it won’t solve alkalinity drift. If it feels like more hassle than it’s worth, bromine or salt systems offer easier water balance.

Short Answer to Fixing Frog Ease Issues:

If you enjoy using the Frog Ease floating system but hate the stuck-behind-filter issue and weekly alkalinity adjustments, the simplest fix is to tether the Frog away from the filter and use baking soda in small amounts to balance alkalinity. If you’d rather switch systems, bromine floaters and saltwater chlorine generators are the most recommended alternatives — both reduce maintenance and offer stable, reliable sanitization.

I use the Frog ease floating sanitizing system. I do love it except for 2 things 1) as pictured below it always gets wedged behind the filter and 2) every week I have to add at least 1/4 cup of akaline increaser. I’m wondering if it’s time to try a new system. Any recommendations on either fixing my 2 issues or a new chlorine system?

How Frog Ease Works — and Why You’re Having Issues

The Frog Ease floating system uses a mineral cartridge + SmartChlor cartridge. It promises up to 75% less chlorine than standard spa care and gives a “flip” signal when it’s empty.

Why it gets stuck: It’s light, so water jets push it into the filter area.
Why you need alkalinity boosts: Frog Ease sanitizes, but does not control alkalinity. pH and alkalinity still need weekly balancing.

Owner-reported fixes include:

  • Attaching the Frog to a fishing swivel + string + suction cup
  • Using a mesh laundry bag or strap to float it away from the filter
  • Adjusting jet flow that pushes the Frog toward the filter
  • Adding alkalinity increaser (or baking soda) regularly — this is normal for many spa setups

Alternatives to Frog Ease — Popular Options

1. Bromine Floaters

  • Easy, stable in hot water, minimal smell
  • Tablets dissolve slowly, lasting longer than chlorine
  • Many users report bromine requires less constant adjusting than Frog Ease

2. Chlorine Systems (Granular or Tablet)

  • Dichlor or non-chlorine shock after use
  • Effective and inexpensive, but burns off faster in hot water

3. Mineral Stick + Ozone or UV Hybrid

  • Lower chemical use, softer water feel
  • Example: Nature2 stick + ozone generator — add a teaspoon of dichlor after use

4. Saltwater Chlorine Generators

  • Add spa-grade salt, generator makes chlorine automatically
  • Hands-off, stable sanitizing, feels softer
  • Example: ControlOMatic systems

5. Other Mentions

  • ICO by Ideal Water Care (smart floating sensor that syncs to phone)
  • O-Care mineral system
  • “DIY” mixes like mineral sticks + dichlor + enzyme

Chemistry Tips

  • Baking soda works just as well as alkalinity increaser
  • Calcium at ~300 ppm can stabilize alkalinity and reduce drift
  • Jets and water features can knock alkalinity down faster
  • Always test pH, alkalinity, and calcium weekly — no system removes the need for water balancing.

Should You Switch Systems?

Stay with Frog Ease if:

  • You don’t mind tethering it or adding baking soda weekly
  • You prefer the convenience of pre-packaged cartridges

Switch if:

  • You want fewer chemical top-offs
  • You want more predictable alkalinity and pH balance
  • You’re tired of frequent cartridge changes
